Bringing this thread back. Is it safe to clean pistons by soaking them in something, such as WD40 like ernie did? Should I stay away from anything? Thanks!

I would say it would work, but I would pull the pistons out before doing anything other than spraying on a solvent and wiping it off w/ a rag.

I would be afraid of some of the scratchings frmo the wire brush or abrasive surface getting down into the ring lands...at least w/ the pistons out, you could wash everything off afterwards.

I've heard of some VW guys revvin the motor up and slowly pouring in a cup of water; the water turns to steam when combusted turns to steam and cleans the pistons....not to be tried at home, though....
