Default cleaning a K&N air filter.....

yesterday i cleaned my air filter.

everything went just fine. i followed the instructions K&N gives you with their cleaning kit. one thing they didnt mention was how long do you have to wait after applying the special oil before putting the air filter back onto the car.

i sprayed the filter with the oil.......let it soak for 20min or so then i re-applied a little more to make sure i got all the spots. i then let is sit for another 30-40min while constantly turning it and rotating it so that the oil soakes into the material evenly.

then i put it back onto the CAI pipe under the front fender.....after a couple of hours there was a puddle of the K&N filter oil under the car.........

i suppose i put to much oil? are you supposed to let it soak for a few hours or somthing?

i took it out for a drive after a few hours and everything seemed fine so i guess there's nothing to really worry about. but K&N doesnt give you a specified time that you should wait after you sparyed the oil onto the filter.............is there a time you should wait or is it just slap it back on and drive?

thanks.......

There's no time limit, just wait until the filter is dry before applying oil and you're golden. And you don't need to ridiculously hose the filter down, but too much oil will simply drip away... too little will result in poor filtration. Don't worry about anything, your vehicle is fine.

Its dripping oil because you didn't let the water dry out completely.

Yeah, whats the difference from letting it dry on the ground or letting it dry while its on the intake, there is none. I would let it sit for awhile after putting it back on the car though. If its dry, put the oil on.

I let mine sit for a day or so just to make sure it was dry after I cleaned it. Then I sprayed it with the oil and put it in my car. The oil doesn't have to "dry", its oil, not water, it won't evaporate. I'm guessing it wasn't completely dry when you sprayed the oil on it. I just coated mine evenly like it the instructions and thats about it. Just made it all red.

I am in the same boat, applied oil and it is dripping now.
So what should I do? Wait or re-do the whole process again and make sure the filter is completely dry after rising? What is the problem of not letting it all dry before applying oil except oil dripping? Thanks!

oil doesn't mix with water. If you try to apply oil to the wet cotton, it won't stick. Those filters are not effective unless properly oiled.

How can I know I spray too much oil or the filter is not completely dry?
My filter sat for half a day before I spray oil on it, and it looks like it is already dry?

Let it dry for a full day or so and then hose it down. You can't really put too much oil on it, just let the eccess run off after spraying it.

thanks!
last question (sorry ), should I re-do the cleaning to ensure no excess water and oil stick to the filter tightly or I should be fine?

You should be fine, unless the filter is very hard to get to I'd just check it the day after you installed and drove with it. If any area needs to be re-oiled go for it.

When i Clean mine i clean it out and before i put oil on it i take it outside and throw it in the air and spin it. think of a helicopter. This gets all the water off it really fast. just a few minutes of doing this. then spray it down with oil and hook it back up.
