Default Chipped ECU's

Ok this sounds like a really stupid question, but what exactly does chipping do to the ecu. Like why would you chip your ECU and get a vafc too, isn't that what the vafc is for. I confused

To chip and ecu, you basically, depending on which ecu it is, you socket it and add a few things in certien cases. The socketing allows for infinite chip removal/replacement. Getting both the vafc/chip is worthwhile because you can additionally tune via the vafc, and moniter your car better.

the chip or eprom has information which controls how much fuel is added, and how much timing advance is used based on inputs, i.e. map sensor load, rpm, throttle position, air temp, coolant temp, etc..

each manufacture like mugen, spoon, etc have their own set of table maps for fuel and timing, which more suits their camshaft profile, header design and head flow in some cases.

many people reprogram wiht a mugen or spoon or xs program etc. those in the *secondary market* just simple have chip burners and copies of those programs. more advanced chip programmers (like myself ) actually edit the maps to best suit the application and mods you currently have or plan on getting. Others just give a generic mugen or skunk2 program which wroks good but is not the best for your setup, i.e. some people dont like 10 mpg while others can live with it.

for the VAFC, it fine tunes the fuel maps to best suit your motor ...
