I'm going to be giving a crack at building my first motor. I can find plenty of mitutoyo mics for good prices on ebay, but when it comes to dial bore gauges, it seems that every listing is for a $500 sunnen.

What's the cheapest dial bore gauge I can buy that goes down to 0.0001?

Also, is buying used precision tools on ebay a bad idea? Some of them look ancient, and I will definitely steer away from them, but some of the used mitutoyo stuff looks pretty decent.

 

u would definitely buy used mitutoyo tools.
As far as bore gauges; the cheap ones will only go to .0005.
I would wait and you might get a good deal on a used one.

Well, I googled the Teclock dial bore gauge. Apparently it's good quality, but no one has ever heard of it because it is not distributed in the U.S., only Japan. I was told not to buy it because there are no repair parts available anywhere and if it breaks you just have to throw it away.
