charging my ac back up help!!!!!!
ok i have everything i need now to hook my ac back up in my recently b16a swapped 92 civic ....p54 bracket....ac belt...2 cans of r12 freon..all i need to know is what line to add the freon to.... which line is the in line and which is the out the one clostest to the front bumper or the one closet to the motor
thanks
thanks
you need to do a lot more than that, if the canister has been sitting for a while you probably gonna have to change it, then you need to vacuum the air and crap out of the lines and then put freon

I think "the canister" he is referring to is really called the receiver/dryer.
If the system is left inoperable more than a week or two the receiver/dryer
soaks up too much moisture from the atmosphere and goes bad.
And where did you get 2 cans of R-12, they must of cost about $200.
And WHO SOLD them to you. Aren't they illegal to sell now?

If you're not expirenced with a/c systems, you really should let a tech
flush, evacuate, and recharge it for you. It's highly dangerous and you could F-up the car if you do it wrong.
Jusy my .02 cents.

Don't know about EG's but, back when my CRX still took R-12,
it was like 36 oz. to fill the system, not 24 oz.
IF you're gonna ATTEMPT this, YOU NEED a helms manual. PERIOD!!
End of discussion.
It would be foolish to try to do it without one.
I don't reccomend you try this!!

yeah in order to this properly you dont just add two cans of r-12, how many lbs exactly does it take? i know mine used to take 1 1/2 lbs, and yes exactly what the above posts said, that if the system is left open for too long the dessicant bag absorbs too much moisture and will not work properly so you must change that, also you have to add freon, and oil to the system, you must vacuum the system to a certain negative pressure then recharge the system. if you over charge it, you can have numerous problems due to excessive pressure.
there are too many variables and if your not experienced get someone who is to do this for you.

The only thing I know is that if you put in too much the compressor will seize up. This happened to both my father and I when we had them switched to R134...at the dealer!!!! FYI. R134 is cheaper, and you need LESS than what you would need of r12 because it doesn't compress as much, hence our compressors both seizing within weeks of each other.
well if you convert to r-134 you have to change out a lot of components like compressor, receiver drier and have to change o-rings, and such, and if you recharge the system you shouldnt have to recharge the system ever unless there are leaks, so you will prolly pay something in the ball park of $60/lb but if its serviced properly then you'll never have to worry about that again.

IF THE SYSTEM IS EMPTY NOW.!!!!
You can get a retro-fit 134a kit at Pep Boys or Autozone and do it yourself.
No you don't need a new compressor if your old one is still good.
THAT's IF the system is empty now.
I would still have a qualified tech or shop do it, though. If your're not
experienced with a/c systems. Too many things can go wrong.
And you can do expensive damage to your car and maybe yourself.
It's not worth saving the $250 in the long run if you F--- something up
like the compressor. BIG $$$$$ to replace out of your pocket.
HTH.
