Default Changing Valve Springs.

There was a thread over in the ITR forum disucssing this topic, but I wanted to investigate it a bit more. Specifically what tool you guys recommend using. I've never done valve springs, and now I have 2 friends that want me to do it (being the handy one with the wrench in my crew). It looks like there are two basic types of compressors, a smaller hand held unit which you screw down the top of and it grips on two sides of the spring, top and bottom. The other type is a larger lever one that bolts to the head.

Screw Handle type: http://buy.snapon.com/catalog/pro_de...re&dir=catalog

Lever Type: http://buy.snapon.com/catalog/pro_de...re&dir=catalog

What are the advantages and disadvantages to these. The smaller one is like 40 bucks, and the lever type is 120 bucks. Any hints/tips/tricks from you guys here?

Thanks for any help!

screw type doesnt work. niether does the c-clamp type without an adapter.

I use the lever type you have shown there.

Hmmm... Perplexing. Any reasons why it doesn't work? Does it work on other manufacturers OHV engines?

When it comes to tools, I will spend the extra money for the good stuff. There is nothing worse than strugling with crappy tools. Thanks!

thats just it. its mean for OHV engines.
We have OHC engines. and on top of that, the valvesprings are set inside the head
which makes that tool useless.

plus, when you have the lever type, you don't have to pull the head to do it. Very, very handy and time saving.

i made an adapter for the clamp type and it works easily....although its still a long process of putting the new keepers in....
