Default Changing an engine designation plate... possible?

I know this sounds like a dumb question and by no means do I intend to do this myself but a situation has arisen where somebody is trying to convince me that they have a Type-R motor that they had re-stamped/plated as a B18A1 in order to smog/ref/whatever their DA (he also had a Valve cover w/ the VTEC ground off).

The head is a legit R, I can tell that right away. So is the trans and manifold for sure.

There are no LS/V lines on the back of it either.

Is it possible to change/replace the number plate? If so, does anybody have a link or something? Sounds like BS to me, I've been in the game for a long time and never heard of it. What do you guys think?

You could do that, but it is completely illegal in all states. I wouldn't touch that motor. Defacing vehicle identification isnt something I'd want to be involved with..
