Default CEL scanning

I just received a CEL on my 2001 CRV. What do you all use to scan your CEL codes?

I have the software to read and clear codes, what I'm looking for is the serial-to-OBD adapter to plug into the car. Which one should I use?

I tried a paperclip and now my hand is numb
