Default CEL Code 6. ECT switch? or ECT sensor?

I had this code before and I figured that the code was for the ECT sensor, the sensor on the theromstat housing. So I changed the sensor and the fan was working no probelm but I still have the CEL?!?! I ordered the ECT sensor, the one about an inch in front of the distributor so I will replace that sensor just to be sure. My question is, what is a code 6? ECT sensor or ECT switch? Also if the ECT switch controls the radiator fan coming on then what does the ECT sensor control? Thanks for the help.

ECT sensor, sounds like the one you're about to replace now.

I think from your description that the first one you replaced was the fan switch. The ECM doesn't see this, so it has no clue whether it's working or not. The ECT sensor is the only one the engine controller knows about.

Just for yuks, the third temperature sender, the smaller one with one wire, is for the dashboard temperature gauge. None of these 3 sensors 'share' any kind of information with each other.
