Default car works lean

hey few days ago i diagnosed my car(98 civic cx) since the engine check was on.
so the code that came out told me that it works lean. so i went out and changed the fuel filter. and after that i reset the computer.so the engine check was off for a day or two, then it went back on and the car hesitates just like before.
I was wondering if this has happend to anyone else who solved this problem before.
[<U>B]CODE:[/B]</U> P0171 SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 1)

Thanks

It could be a few things.. make sure you have adequate fuel pressure check regulator , Check the injectors.. may be clogged.. test your fuel pump maybe its starting to go out.. How does the car start when cold? Does it have long cranking? Also was there any other codes.. or that the only one?

check the feed line, if the feed line is bad you will run lean and have low fuel pressure.

might be your o2 sensor. check it with a wideband, or a pipe sniffer.

i'm talking about the emissions tester, you can tell if your car is really running lean or not by using this or a wideband o2 sensor.

hey i took out the fuel pump, it was flaw less it looked brand new and inside my gas tank was the same. so i connected it to my battery to see how it sounds. and it sounded very smooth. so i went and took out the fuel injectors. with the fuel rail and every thing.
all around the injectors where oily or i don't like gas build up or something(it was black)
so now i don't know what else it could be.
im gonna get it diagnosed today and see what it says again.

What code was it? I am guessing its going to be an O2 problem.

Never heard of the "working lean" code. Like I asked, what specifically was the code? And if you dont know what an o2 has to do with a car running lean.....maybe you should take your car somewhere to get diagnosed.

ok i got it diagnosed again with my uncles diangnostics code reader.
and IT SAYS &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; P0171&lt;&lt;&lt;&lt; so i read in its book and for P0171 it says &gt;&gt;
SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 1)
so now i dont know wat else to do. im still leaning towards the fuel pump more.
there could be somthing rong with it electronicly. that suchs bad)
and yesturday i fulled the tank and put in one of those fuel injector cleaners the black STP one.
but the car hesitated again ones on my way back home from the gas station.

Nobody said the fuel filter which is the most obvious possibility.

How's your ignition timing?

How did the fuel pump strainer look when you took it out? Those are real cheap and if you had it out you should have changed it. It makes a difference on these 12+ year old cars.

If there doesn't seem to be a problem with the fuel pump, don't waste your money guessing. You'd be better off taking it somewhere than just throwing parts at it.

i did change the fuel filter. as a matter of fact i cut it open to see how it looks and it was pretty dirty but its still like that.

well if ur talking about the filter thing on the pump, i have to say that it was as clean as new so was the pump itself and the inside of the tank. all looked brand new. BY the way my car is a 98 its not a 12+. just so u know.

and about this, yah im thinking of taking it to honda and let them check it out. but the thing is that i dont want to spend to much on this engine since im changing it to an sir engine next summer.
