Default Car Starting Problem

I'm not sure what's wrong with my car but when I tried to start it today it wouldn't crank over. I pressed the clutch down and turned the key but the engine didn't crank. I tried pumping the clutch pedal a few times and then tried to start it again, it would sometimes start and sometimes not. I checked the clutch fluid and found out that it was low so I added more. The problem still persists though. My friend said that I might have to bleed the clutch/lines but I'm not sure if it's the clutch or some other thing that's the cause. All electrical functions are normal when the key is on the "on" notch so it's probably not a dead battery. The car's a 96 civic ex 5spd. Hopefully you guys can come up with a few possible causes...Thanks

it cant be the clutch because even without fluid and the pedal goes to the floor it will still start because of the netural safety switch...its either an air or fuel problem...does this happen when in the mornings or afternoons?

Does it click when you turn it?

Could be a bad starter, your battery may be dead, loose battery terminals, blown fuse. etc...

I noticed that it would start if i press the clutch pedal down REALLY HARD. So it probably is the clutch interlock switch...but i'm still not sure.

On a side note, I let a friend try to diagnose the problem today, he checked the ignition connetors/wires under the steering wheel console with a voltmeter. He unplugged a wire to the distributor cap before he checked the voltage of the ignition connectors/wires. At the end of the day he ended up messing up my speedometer, it now jumps and stays at 20mph but sometimes it would work normally. Anyone know what's wrong with it? The VSS sensor perhaps?...any help is appreaciated
