Cannot read the cars ECU?
Hey, i have had a problem with my car the past couple of weeks. I dont know if this mechanic is trying to chince me, but My car stopped on me I tried reading the codes it would give me but it says theirs an error and it cannot read it. The mechanic is telling me he has to buy some custom part or some **** to read it since its all after market( Swapped engine). Is he trying to rip me for that part or is there actually something like that?
He didnt want to give me a name of the part...
Is there actually a part you need to buy to read swapped engine codes? I think the whole ECU is broken

i would have a difficult time trusting someone who cannot or is not willing to tell me what part they will be charging me for. If you're getting charged for it, you own it. so if it's some adapter tool or something he expects to keep... that's his investment not yours.
this is another problem. you really need to know about your own setup especially if you're coming to a tech forum to discuss it. you don't necessarily need to know how to troubleshoot it or understand all of its intricacies, but at least know what you've got. find that out, and maybe some of the ECU/tuning experts can clear things up for you.

bought this car half a year ago thinking it wouldnt have anything electrical done to it so why bother checking it(if it only has 90000km). I Only know whats under the hood. But thanks for the heads up

There is nowhere to try the paper clip method?
in 5 weeks 2 mechanics still do not know what is wrong they just keep telling me its something electrical as they say" theres a problem because the injector isent getting a spark or being told to turn on"? What can this be?
And I do not believe this can be OBD1 or 2? The 2nd mechanic was telling me that it is an after market computer and that I would have to get a new one? Is there such thing as aftermarket performance ECU's? Does Rukus Motorsports sell them if so? As they are telling me this.

Why don't you take it to an Import Mechanic who actually knows what they are doing instead of some random grunt in a grease suit who calls themselves mechanics.
If i would have asked for peoples 2 cents then it would have been in the info, If people at the corner of busy intersections call themselfs import proffesionals then i believe they should know.
