can i drill/cut my strut? will it explode?
Your strut is under alot of pressure if the spring is still on it I wouldn't suggest doing it. You may want to explain why you need to do this.
yeha i was in a hurry when i posted of course i will though.
they are coil overs and there is no pressure when they are all the way down, but anyways.
on my '90 hb, and most civics/cars, the front strut slides down into the knuckle (fork looking thing that bolts onto the A-arm). there is a notch in the strut , so when it slides into this fork, you put a bolt through the fork and it also slides past the notch locking the strut into the fork/knuckle.
this bolt that holds the strut in has snapped off cuase it was rusted so bad. the head broke right off. drilling the hole out is not really an option, it was actually an unsucessful option.
so, i cant really get another fork unless from a junk yard, which i owuld have to pull and it could be rusted on too, and i have to get this strut out it is totally blown fubar beyond blown, i rides like nothing is there at all. i bought new KYB struts and got the other front side pretty much in. the passenger side is the one that is stuck.
so i cant cut the fork part, as it is hard to get.
i need to either try to compress the coilover to allow me to shove the assemblie more upwards, and lift the fork over the axle and junk and slide it out, (which i am trying this week with a spring compressor)
or cut the whole dam thing in half with any sawsall cutting grinder thing i can think of. cause it is really starting to be too combersomb and i hate the ride quality( so does my spine)
i see when you install newer mcphearson struts that you can drill a small whole and let the stuff drain out, augmenting the hole as you go.
and you press on the strut and it all comes out, so i figure if i drill a hole and let some of it out it might not be mad, but i wasnt sure if all struts where the same it could be like gas and explode maybe? even though the intreal seal is completly blown so there isnt as much pressure as a stock one would have.
either way, i am getting so irretated i might just get some punches and crease a hole in it and then tie a rope to it and pull it out with the deere.
taking the whole spindle off isnt a fun option either.
thanks for any help,
if none, ill let you know if i take a trip to the hospital or not!
peace
