Can a engine swap go bad just sitting?
Bought a new motor for a swap, does not have any fluids in it and is just sitting in my garage atm.
Was just wondering if a motor can go bad from sitting like this? I’m assuming not much can happen to it but just wanted some opinions.
Also wondering if cold temps from winter would affect it and if there are any techniques I should know to store it better.
It would most likely only sit for a 1-3 years until I’m ready to do the swap.

The longer it sits, the more chance of something happening to it. Your seals will shrivel and dry out more and more over time. Not to mention collecting dust and whatnot. But, generally answered; not really anything major to worry about. The longer it sits, the more attention you'll need to pay when time comes to swap.
To add to that, I would add a little oil or ATF as mentioned above and rotate it over by hand to cover the cylinder walls covered and piston rings freed up every couple months.
If you're planning to rebuild the engine, you can remove the valve cover and cover the longblock with a large clear trash bag. This will keep elements out.
