no, honda autos shift slowly. an auto is only fast in a turbo supra drag car. you cannot make vtec, you have to have it. and you can't just swap engines and expect the d-series tranny to mate with it.

he never said he wanted to "make" VTEC he wants to convert whatever he has to VTEC so he worded it correctly. I wouldnt want to make an auto car fast unless it was a Supra or 300zx or other "performance" car that was made "fast and auto" from the factory. I am sure there are ways to make an auto transmission built to last under higher HP (I would bet money there is tranny upgrades for auto civics if they have em for Altimas...LOL). Do some google searches on it....

Ok I have a 97 Civic EX auto.

Can autos be fast? Yes.

Is it going to cost a lot of money? Yes.

Is it worth it? Probably not.

An auto to manual conversion is probably what you should do.

An auto to manual conversion will cost close to $1000.

Instead save up $1500 and go for a B18b swap and do the auto to manual with it.

You sound young so I recommend:
Dont hotrod your car til youre older. You will probably wreck it.
Make friends with local Honda guys so they can help you out.
Dont waste money on stupid **** like CAIs and loud exhausts until you have that B18b installed.

$1000 for an auto to manual conversion................WTF

And what grounds do you base your advice of a B18B swap. What is wrong with the D16 he is running right now????

Hell if yo uare goign to get a JDm D15 head...may as well get the whole damn longblock. Most people use the D16Z6 or D16Y8 for mini me (besides the D15...they are the only SOHC VTEC engines unless you want the VTEC-E D16Y5

I have a turbo D16 and theres nothing wrong with it. The auto does suck though. If he had a 5 speed D16 I heartily recommend going with turboing the D16. But the auto completely sucks ***. I know I have one.

I now see he is in Cali so I suppose he can get the auto to manual conversion for cheaper. Here in NY its different.

And for all you people with reading comprehension problems. The problem with the D16 is its an AUTOMATIC.

He would probably be better off in the long run with a B18b. It DOHC, its .2 liters bigger and they are readily available and cheap. Youll notice I didnt recommend a B18c. Later on he could turbo the B18b.

And what are ya'll paying for auto to manual swaps?

I would do the d16y8 head. Strongest d series head that honda made!!! and the CR is crazy high, so make sure if you do that head swap that you only use 93 octane or else you will have pre det problems

hrm the conversion itself, if you get junk yard parts cost me $90 plus a tranny and clutch kit. Depending on the tranny you may spend up to $1200 just on the tranny

If youre looking for a sportscar, forget the automatic, just get a manual with an engine swap to perhaps a b16. Autos shift slowly, waste power and are heavy, not to mention remove alot of the fun of having a sportscar.
