Default Cams

Hey guys,

I just replaced a head gasket in my B16. I am putting the cams back in and had a few questions. I know I should get some lube to place on them (Suggestions????). And also should I get the Hondabond for the the the driver side cam caps? If anybody has any info they can help me with that would be appreciated. I have read write ups. I am just wondering what you guys think and do.

Thanks

If the cams are already broken in you do not need to use special lube, just pour engine oil on all the lobes before putting the valve cover back on. You can use Hondabond, which is good stuff or any commercially available RTV (use black RTV not the colored crap, Permatex is good). The secret to a good seal is making sure that the area where you put the RTV is completely oil free. Spray it off with some brake kleen and let it dry.

Only reason I ask about lubing the cams is because they have been sitting out for a while. Should I lube the inside of the cam caps?

I usually just put some assembly lube on the cam and the caps. Its good peace of mind.

I use use RTV. I know some people swear by Hondabond but RTV works fine for me

Yes, you should always lube the cam bearing surfaces. You can either use just engine oil or some clean white grease if you want to. You do not need to use assembly lube on the cam as long as the original rockers are used on the original lobes. It won't hurt if you use assembly lube but you don't need to. The secret to sealing anything using any type of sealant whether it be hondabond or rtv is that it be completely clean and dry. I use brake kleen to assure this.

Alright this weekend I will attempt this. I got the assembly lube and the RTV. We will see what happens. Hopefully I will get to start the car for the first time too!!
