what are good sources for cam design theory and performance yields?

Cam design is perhaps the most difficult/non-intuitive subsystem within the engine, while at the same time the most important for achieving your goals.

There are a handful of books around, don't shy away from different types of motors...Smoky Yunick's series for small block chevies is probably the most comprehensive. Most Barnes and Nobles will have a few books covering the basic dynamics.

Here's a guy I used to converse with on a mustang board. He has set up a computer model to characterize flow systems and has been setting up custom grinds for 5.0s for many of the board members: http://www.wighat.com/fcr3/

Crower had some decent diagrams on this, not sure if they are still there. If the Endyn board comes back up try a search there, i know it has been discussed before. Like Matt said, this stuff isn't simple.
