Hey, im going to be replacing the cam seals today, anyone have any experience with this on a b series engine? What do i torque the "screws" back to, and help would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

Just make sure that the seals go in evenly or you can have a nasty oil leak. What kind of engine is it?

 

it is a b17 engine, out of a 92gsr

 

torque the inside cam cap bolts to 16 lbs./ft., and torque the two bolts at each end (cap # E1, E5, I1, and I5)on both the intake and exhaust side to 8 lbs./ft., they should be smaller then the rest.

 

When you use Hondabond to seal them also go a little out of the journal and onto the flat area under the cam cap and around the bolt holes. The cam seals are prone to leak.

 

The cam gear bolts torque is 37 ft. lbs.

 

my manual says the cam gear bolt is 27 lbs? Is that correct

 

the 12mm cam cap bolts are 16ft lbs and the 10mm cam cap bolts are 7.2lbs.

 

It is not necessary to remove the cams to replace the cam seals. If you do, the 12mm cam cap bolt spec is 19 ft./lbs. The 10mm bolt torque spec is 7.2 ft./lbs which I round up to 8 ft./lbs. I am pretty sure that the cam gear bolt torque spec is higher than either of the torques listed in previous posts. I am going into work later and i will post it for you. I think it's around 45 ft./lbs. , but I will let you know for sure later.

yea the motor i have has a cam seal leak that i will be needing to fix. cant wait to fix it and get it on the road

 

if you're simply replacing the camseals and nothing more, I wouldn't remove the cam caps. waste of time.

 

careful not to tighten em down to tight prone to busting (broke 1 today and last week! well a lil longer then last week) the keeper bolts.

Cam gear bolt torque-B18B = 27 ft./lbs.
B18C = 41 ft./lbs.

 

Don't remove the caps- it is very easy to pinch the edge of the seals when you reinstall the caps and they can leak. Just remove the cam gears and pull out the old seals with a pick or small screwdriver. Lube the new seals with some grease (especially on the lip) and install them by placing them by hand and then push on them with the open end a properly sized socket or something similar (like a deep 27mm or something). A little grease on the outside of the seal will help it slide in easily.

 

Can someone tell me how many cam seals are on a 98 GSR? I've decided that I am going to replace them while the motor is out and I am knocking the timing belt, water pump, etc....

there are three, two by the timing belt. one on the intake cam, and one on the exhaust cam! the third one is, on the exhaust cam next to the distributor. Looks like a rubber plug!
