Calico vs King vs ACL vs OEM
Looking for bearings... which ones with stand a good pounding.... and why....ive been to all the web site...except oem, duh. And they all seem pretty good....but thats probaly all advertising ...i wanna hear the critics........
Honda has seven bearing sizes. ACL/King/Cleavite/ect. bearings are sized for Honda's green (middle) bearing. As long as you're around the middle of the clearance range you're fine with one-size-fits-most bearings. As an example, I need Honda's two smallest bearing sizes for my rods (black and blue) and a green bearing set (two halves, not all of the rods) put my clearances well past the run out limit. In that case, aftermarket bearings would be a bad choice.
And bearings aren't meant to stand up to a pounding. Don't beat on your motor.

And why in the hell would you cheap out on one-size-fits-most bearings only to spend more money screwing up your crank? Just spend the $200 on OEM bearings and get the proper clearances while keeping Honda's all important crank journal coating.

yea i mean...them racing bearing should be good in there ways....but what better than honda engineering you know....but then again....they are called racing bearnigs for a reason...so im still confused...im mean im pretty sure many ppl dont use oem ones for 400whp cars

Those people took the time to check their bearing clearances to make sure their bearings were within spec, they then replaced out of spec bearings with OEM Honda bearings.
Personally, I choose to do things correctly the first time and not cut corners. If saving $120 is worth the possibility of having to re-rebuild your motor, go for it.

BTW, this stupid question gets asked a lot. Anyone who's built a lot of motors knows that it doesn't really matter what brand of bearings you use. They all work, obviously, or they wouldn't be sold. There aren't any that work "better" than others, despite manufacturer claims.
I've used OEM and ACL a lot. 200whp, 500whp, etc. It doesn't really matter. Idiots ruin motors, not aftermarket bearings. People just like to blame this product or that product when their motors fail because they're angry and need a scapegoat.

as pounding on oem bearings my last b20/vtec motor was turning 8500 rpm's, and the reason for me going with oem is that the there was a new crank in it thanks to acl bearings, and just like 91SiZ6 said u can size ur bearings instead of hoping wutever u get works out for the best, i'm sure i'm speaking for most around here but i dont like to spend money just to f**k **** up

Grind, Turn, machine. You obviously cant just throw some bearings in and call it a day. i have the machine shop grind the crank. The journals on the crankshaft would have to be the same to be able to use one size bearing.

Not true. That's why there is a range between the high/low service limit.
For anyone who DOESN'T know, a standard ACL bearing set will spec out on most motors. If for some reason you install some ACLs and have a journal or two with unfavorable clearances, you can buy the correct bearings ($4 each via hondaautomotiveparts) to get the clearances where you want them. I've never had to do that though.

The problem that too many people make is thinking that they're fine just slapping a set of aftermarket bearings in without at least Plastigaging. i got a set of king bearing for my allmotor gsr setup, but only coz i got a good deal on them. heard a lot of good things, as long as the clearances are within spec. either one should work. youre barely gonna notice the differences (if any) between them anyways..
Well most of you guys are right...except for griding down crank buddy up there....but yea i guess after i plastigauge the motor ill find the cheapest bearings out there...which i think are ACL...That is if clearances are good

well i will have to credit the brains of this forum 91SiZ6 and EnzoSpeed, granted there are cheaper bearings out there that may work but i really wanna know whats cheaper in the long run, and also i would love to add is that honda has been making bearings for um i dont know...........50 years and ACL has been out for i think 5-6 maybe so i think the good ole OEM is what we and various builders around the WORLD think is well frankly worth a f*ck - just my lil 2 cents - sorry for the long post
