bypassing heater core: pics

do you think this will hold for a 900 mile trip from VA to IL

That should be just fine. Just make sure you do NOT overtighten those worm drive type hose clamps. You should not be able to feel the rubber from the hose that has squeezed through the holes. The way you have it looks fine.
