busted clutch->new crank?
Has anyone heard of a bad clutch leading to crankshaft failure?
The dealer is jacking my friend for $4k to replace his crank and clutch on a 99 Prelude...and they are blaming it all on the clutch...something doesn't seem right...

i've heard of a really strong clutch leading to crankshaft problems. i think that depends on the type of car and the clutch though. i haven't heard of this being a problem in Hondas. only cars like the DSM.
I 've also read that some aftermarket flywheels can damage the crankshaft. I 've heard race clutches could do the same but I don't know of anyone with a Honda that had this problem.
If you to Centerforce or other Clutch manufacturer's websites they claim that other clutch brands and flywheels could do "damage to your engine". Not sure exactly in what way but the crankshaft would be my guess.

I've heard of REALLY stiff clutches damaging the crank thrust bearings. I suppose the flange that the flywheel bolts to could also be damaged. I don't see what else could do any crank damage. The price seems really high. Hondaparts lists a new crank for $654ish. Plus assorted bearings, seals, gaskets plus the labor and new clutch, maybe $2K, at dealer prices. You should be able to get a new shortblock installed plus the clutch for less. I'd want a lot more info before handing over that kind of money.

Especially if it's still under warranty.

**** those bitches. tell them they do not know what they are talking about. be confident and ask for proof. ask them to see the car and then look at the oil pan. try to see if it has been pulled off. wouldnt they have to check the thrust beaing cleareance to see "if" it "was" bad? i hate when dealers try to **** you and try to talk over you head like you dont know what your talking about. i called the dealer friday about some bearings for my 91 teg with b16. i told the guy i needed b16 bearings and he was like what? i told 99-00 Si and he knew exactly. I HATE THE DEALER!!!
