building a harness.. All input needed!
My name is Anthony and I'm new to Honda-tech.. Well a new member, this site helped me out in many ways in the past. but I'm here and registered now for some of your guys opinions and input on this topic. Wasn't entirely sure where to post this topic, so I chose Tech/Misc section. I've also done a lot of searching and research on this topic. why I'm asking for input now
Alright so I'm building a engine harness for my boosted EG, It's pretty much the only aftermarket thing left to do it to. I've always had some weird obsession with wires sense I was like 7, so this is more of a pride project than anything else. anyways.
I run S300 with Hondata coil on plug. I plan on building an "electrical panel" under my glove box with all the boxes mounted to it(cop, s300, fuse box..)
My main questions are about the harness its self. When researching harnesses I came across chasebay and rywire and said to my self... Why spend the money for theirs when I can just make my own. I recently build or "rebuild" a friends 240 SR swap harness so I know what to expect. ANYWAYS..
Questions are, What type of AWG are strictly used in the B series engine harness. like.. what could I buy a bulk of..I have not opened mine up yet as it is spring and my car is awaiting a tune. but when I do I'm going to try to figure them all out..plus if I could go smaller and lighter.. or larger and safer etc.. I'm trying to order the "main" size wires and stuff to get a jump start.
Ive ordered Mil-spec wire in 20,18,16 AWG at about a dollar a foot.. only 26 feet in total to experiment with, and I wanna use the 20AWG for the majority but it just seems a little bit to small. and mostly 20 seemed small to me but mil-spec wires are definitely different then others and you have to work with it to know what I mean. Any input on this subject?
Also would I be jumping in the deep end using Mil-Spec grade stuff? With my obsession I want to and money really isn't a issue, but I've done a bunch of research on it and it seems to be the best.. Another option was just auto grade TXL wire.. Its a lot cheaper and more colors are available. Anyone have any experience with either?
Connectors. The harness is starting to get beat up.. and it looks like a pile of $%^ under my intake mani. This the reason for building my own and figure I would use new connectors.... Now we all know its hard to source genuine OEM connectors, but I did come across Chasebay's selection and its going to make things easier... at a price.. anyone have any other sources for oem connectors?
Terminal crimping... I'm going to have to use new terminals and I had used another tech's chrimpers are work with the install aftermarket injectors.. They seemed to do the trick but came out at about 8/10 quality of the chrimps IMO.. I just didn't think that they were the right chrimpers for the job.. I have to also get ones that correlate with weather seals I believe and again I will spend a little more on them.. Remember if I'm not spending a grand on everything then I'm still cheaper then other companies..
With coil on plug.. Is there any wires I can eliminate out of the distributor? or do they all still have to be used.. I have access to all-data and Mitchel and understand diagrams but if there is one of those 3 sensors I could do without.. I would be more then happy to removed them completely. Also.. Do those wires have to be shielded? They all seem to use 2 wires so I would be running 3 shielded cables and they show that they are shielded in the diagrams.. but what about the can bus twist to eliminate interference.. Will that work aswell?
Now does anyone have any experience building a harness from the ground up? would it be eaiser to build one using a 3 different color coded wires for power, ground, and single? or using a bunch of different colors maybe trying to mimic oem Honda colors.. If I decide to go mil-spec I will probably do the 3 color setup for cost reasons. Figured it wouldn't be that hard for diag with a multi-meter..
Alright that's it for now.. I'm going to definitely build one to my car.. These are just the questions that I'm unsure of.. and I know this post is going to be a pain to read.. just trying to be detailed on these topics and acquire all the right tools and know-hows. Plus if you done it before let me know how it went.
Thanks!
