Default brakes are starting to worry me

hey guys,
so i've had the same pads on my car ('99 GSR) since around 40k miles. it's at 70k now and the pads still have about 1/2 cm left on them. a few days ago i was driving with a full trunk and 5 people in the car and had to slam on the brakes because i mis-timed a yellow light. the ABS went on but everything braked ok and did its job fine.

shortly after that, my brakes started acting up. when i start to brake, everything is ok but if i press a little harder than normal i feel a rumble through the pedal and you can tell the brakes aren't stopping as hard or fast. it doesn't feel like the rotors are warped because it doesn't happen 100% of the time. but it feels like the ABS is kicking in but only with slightly strong braking, definitely nowhere near the limit it should hit when the ABS should kick in.

the pads still have meat on them and i'm getting the car serviced for its 70k this weekend. they will put in new pads for me if i bring my own or buy acura ones for $50 (any suggestions?), but i just don't know what's wrong with the brakes and am worried that replacing the pads won't fix my problem. maybe it is warped rotors, but it sure doesn't feel like it, and i definitely don't abuse my brakes.

any insight? thanks!

nope, it was an empty car. it does it under any load now...

i rarely brake hard. i am a granny driver and i baby my car. i downshift when i slow down. i have only braked hard enough to activate the ABS maybe 10 times in the 3 years i've had the car...

i doubt it has to do anything with the brakes itself.
is the abs light on?

Then that could be your problem.... You braked hard once, so you subconsciously think that you messed something up while at the same time all your subsequent stops seem that much less effective because of that hard-braking experience. I mean, you brake to 5% of a car's ability for three years, and then all of a sudden you do 100%...that 5% is going to feel like like 1% all of a sudden.

This is the reason that people get 500+ horsepoower in their cars. First they bump it up to 150hp and they're like "Whoa, it's fast", and then it doesn't feel so fast anymore so they bump it up to 200hp....and the process continues.

My theory is that there is absolutely no difference in your brakes. I brake right up to the point of lockup probably on average 30 times every day, with more aggressive pads and wider tires. I doubt one hard stop would do anything to your car.

My advice to you....brake hard more often. Use your car for what it was meant to be used. They designed it to withstand many times more than it's possible to throw at it.

I know what braking hard feels like. And I know that feeling an ABS-like feedback through the pedal at normal braking is NOT normal. I've been driving this car for 3 years. I know when it's not working right.
