Bottom End Refresh: Honing a cylinder.....DIY question?
I'm going to help my buddy rebuidl his bottom end with new rings and bearings for his B18B....we want to prep it for the LS/VTEC conversion. He has all the parts that we need for the conversion, but he wants to refresh the bottom end with new rings and bearings. The question I have is, should we hone the cylinders? He says that its not necessary, but I'm sure we have to hone them so that the rings have a fresh new surface to grab onto. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the motor has about 120k miles on it as of now and I'm sure honing would be better. Its his car so I'm just helping him, but if he wants to cut corners, then its on him. I recommend honing but its up to him.
Another question I have is, has anyone on here honed their own cylinders? I saw my uncle do it once on a Toyota 22R motor, so it doesn't look so complicated...what is the process and materials that I need? I know I need oil and a honing stone and a drill. Other than that, what else do I need? What procedure should I follow?
Any input would be greatly appreciated asap considering we are starting this project this week.
Thanx guys!

i would measure cylinders for egg shaping, its there; just how much.
PTWC could be off or almost there. if thats the case boring to the next size up is the answer.
if the crosshatch is there and the cylinders are not off by a lot you could just put the rings in or give it a de-glaze with a ball hone.
