Default RPM dropoff?

My buddy got a new car. It is a stick shift BMW 3 series. I drove it and shifting is much different then the prelude. For some reason the RPMs dropoff almost instantly in the BMW compared to my prelude? It is more involved to shift in the BMW. Why is this? Is this because I have an aftermarket clutch?
