Blown timing belt
hey whats up guys. I have a 92 honda accord with the SOHC 2.2L engine. While I was driving down the road getting ready to stop i hear a humming noise and then the car shut off. So when we looked at it at the shop the timing belt snapped, the timing belt was only 5months old. Now alot of older honda techs were telling me that I could probally get away with just replacing the timing belt with the chance of a blown head. Now other techs are telling me that if I'm lucky i bent some valves but most likley blew the motor. Now can someone please tell me what the hell is true and whats not.
.....By the way I did not hear any knocking or feel any vibrations like alot of
people said i would have heard/felt and also the car trys to crank over from the bottem crank...

Okay well.. who ever installed the belt put the belt too tight, thats why its snapped. I would hold them responsible and they should pay for the bill or do the work for free.
Now to answer your question you have no way of knowing if the engine is damaged untill you put the timing belt back on and do a compression test. Out of the 20 or so TB's ive seen snap on interference engiens.. only about 20% of those bent a valve.

sohcs are forgiving when it comes to bent valves. Yeah 5 months is like yesterday with t belt service. There is a reason the belt snapped find that problem first. Be able to answer the ? why did the belt snap? You caouldn't tighten a belt enough that it would fail in 5 months. As stated take it back to the pp; who worked on it it is on them most likely.
