BEST way to Drive STICK?
Hello guys,
I just started driving STICK. I love it but I want to drive it WELL (without damaging the car in anyway). I want to drive it smooth.
Are there any resources/website, I can look at to learn more about driving stick well??
Another concern is I don't want to burn my clutch and make sure I'm using it properly. For example, when I shift from 1->2, 2->3, as I bring up the clutch to the catch point, I give it a little gas to smooth it out. From 3->4, I don't give it any gas and just shift.
Do you add gas when shifting? What's the best way to not wear out your clutch?
I've been driving stick for 2 weeks, and want to get this mastered. I love driving.

pm me with any question you have, as technical as you can expain it and ill let ya know
... No you do NOT want to give it gas in a shift. dont listen to whoever told you that.
If you are trying to "eliminate that bump" between your shifts, all it really is, is a timing thing... lets say for argument sakes..
you are in 1st gear at 5k rpms doing 20mph...
in 2nd gear at 3k you are doing 20mph...
so when you are in 1st taking it up to 5k, you want the next gear to engage at 3k to be smooth, so you wait for the RPMs to drop off and match the next gears speed... its basically all timing, a "feel thing" that you will get used to, but DONT BURN UR CLUTCH OR LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT SAYS YOU NEED CLUTCH TO DRIVE..
even when you are starting from a dead stop... there is NO NEED to
vroo vroo vroo vroooooooooooooooooooooooooom away. without using gas, slip your foot off the clutch until you feel it engange, or the car start to vibrate, and walk your foot off it after it has momentum..
you technically can fully drive your car without ever depressing the clutch (except starting obviously)
this all might be random and hard to make sense of lol PM me for clairification!
clutch burning= wack!!!

****from the stop i always give about 2k rpm and let cluch slow..bad????
also everytime i shift i give lillilili gas when cluch is almost enguaged...bad???
btw: hard to drive smooth 1st to 2nd..(i can make it smooth if i give lil more gas and let clutch go slow likw 1st gear.but it will eat clutch faster

i used to do that ALL the time. I've stopped since the motor swap though, due to the addition of an extremely short throw shifter

Yea driving without using the clutch is a very useful skill. I had to drive my friends crvtec all the way to the shop with a broken clutch, rev-matching the whole way. As long as you don't come to a complete stop, it's basically like driving an old diesel or a semi..

sure its actually quite easy.. but i've been warmed it might be harmful to your syncros...
basically you start out knowing that which ever gear you are in, when you back off the throttle, use a little pressure and it will slip out of gear with no clutch...
now you kind of "lean the shift level" into the next gear, hold it their with some pressure, and when the motor matches transmission speed it will slip right in, sometimes smoother then using a clutch... dont get me wrong i've grinded doing it but rare... if your syncros are torn up, dont try this, as instead of "leaning on the gear" you will crash rite into it and grinddd
hope that helps

No ****.
Don't discuss stupid **** people.. it's not good on your gears. Even if it's not grinding, it's causing wear.. which will decrease transmission longevity.
It wears down more than just a synchro.
Learn to drive stick properly.

work on it, the less clutch you are reving on the longer it will last...
before you start giving it gas make sure your already slightly engaging the clutch

Obviously my post was for people who have operating clutches, dipshit.
Way to get me on a technicality! I gotta say, I didn't see it coming...
I guess I should have said:
"Learn to drive stick improperly, JUST IN CASE your clutch cable breaks!"

God, you are an idiot. Please research how transmissions work before you came here and try to sound like you actually know what you are talking about. Just research, then come back here. Thanks. Also, to anyone else that is paying attention and isn't a complete MORON like this douchebag:
It is possible to shift without disengaging the clutch. If you happen to hear any grinding sounds, it is not your gears. It is the synchros in your transmission. See, the actual GEARS have flat teeth on them. In between these gears are little "helper" gears called synchros that smooth out the transition from one gear to another. Before synchros were being used, we had to use a technique called "Double Clutching" Basically, if you were in first gear and accelerating, you would have to disengage the clutch, pull the shifter out of 1st gear, into Neutral, rev-match the trans speed with the engine speed, then shift into 2nd gear and engage the clutch again going into 2nd. This is called double clutching because there are 2 sequences of engaging and disengaging the clutch. If you want to be able to shift without the clutch at all then in any gear, while accelerating, let off the throttle, bring the RPMs up a bit, and let the tach drop while applying pressure to the next gear and you will FEEL where the trans speed and the engine speed MATCH and it will slip into the next gear. There is no advantage to doing this in fact it is even SLOWER than just using the clutch to do the dirty work for you. So if you ever hear someone say they are double clutching or anything of the sort (Like in fast and the furious) you now know what it really means and that Vin Diesel is just a complete moron.

Well I don't think it was Vin Diesel's fault, but that's a non-issue.
Good info in this thread...perhaps I should practice driving a bit more.
And why did Kendall mention Heel-Toe? I thought that was just for braking/downshifting; I figure in daily driving we have to get a feel for rev-matching for the downshift.
The strange part is...I'm fairly well-coordinated so I can pull these moves, but I don't have practice street-driving so...this was a helpful thread.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bug into your 'driving stick 101' class, with optional 'rev matching for morons who shouldn't be driving with a shot clutch or snapped cable 102' course.
You're honestly just contributing to stupidity.
You've come into the thread presuming to be some genius on driving a stick, yet you've never worked with transmissions before. Assuming that from your statement of: "but i've been warmed it might be harmful to your syncros".
On a side note, there are many threads on this type of stuff in the archives. If you want to be helpfull next time (without coming off as an uneducated oblivious schmuck attempting to make himself look smart by discussing irrelevant information), then I suggest you do some more research for your own sake, and learn to point people in the right direction instead of telling people how to **** their transmissions up.

heres another tip but hopefully it wont be overseen by mr nissan rb over there
and yes.. I KNOW, MANY PEOPLE KNOW THIS.. but not ALL, so I dont want to hear it from thoes except people that it helped!
lets say you are cruising along in 5th and a light turns red infront of you and you are coming to a stop, wether you fully downshift or not(come off the clutch in the gear), it helps to run through the pattern while slowing down, as in, clutch 4,3,2 dont bother 1 because when you are rolling its a bit stiffer to get into, this will make 1st gear smoother to get into when at a full stop
its just like ALWAYS... when going into reverse... go up and over to 1st, then down and back to reverse... it will stop reverse from grinding..
just throwing random aspecs in.. many people were taught by themselfs and lose out on ever knowing some tricks
