the b16 trans is weaker and has no lsd. a R trans goes for $1000 to $1500
the ONLY diffrence is no lsd on a b16
they are identical internally.
this also depends on what ur doing. if your gonna stay NA, then ITR/B16 is the way to go. B16 is SLIGHTLY differnent from the R tranny, but its unnoticable, and it doesnt have an LSD. if your going turbo, then an LS tranny would be more benificial for longer gears

If you don't belive me go into the Drag Racing forum and post this question. There's a certain guy on there that can set you straight and I think when he talks you should listen to what he says since he runs 8's in the 1/4 mile.
Also do a search for that question in the Drag Racing forum there was already a debate about it.

God do we have to go over this again?? Longer gears ARE NOT BETTER FOR TURBO!!!! GS-R or B16 trans are what you want for a turbo setup shorter gears equals better for drag. If anything you would change the 5th gear for cruising but that's it. Please do not misinform people in the forum.

its okay, everyone just takes what other people say, and just repeats it.
If one person has a fluke experiance, then it becomes the standard.
is the 98-01 itr trannys all the same, also are the usdm and jdm itr trannys the same?
anyone?
anyone?
All you need to know on gearing. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=421083
Longer gears are not better for boost, shorter gears are.
BTW, ITR and B16 trannys are not the same ratios. See for yourself.

A 4.75 alone does have an effect on performance. You set it later on your post, you get out of te hole better. It will make you a bit faster on most cases.
best?
98+ jdm itr tranny has the best features.....
dual cone synchros, 4.7 final drive, beefy mainshaft.
but they are pricey, like $1550+ shipped for used units and $1800+ for new (also called a Spoon tranny because Spoon resells the 98+ jdm itr tranny)
96.5-97 spec jdm itr is equal to the 97+ us/canadian ITR tranny...
dual cone synchros, 4.4 final drive
can be had for $1000 to $1500 used in good shape depending on condition
B16 trannies are 4.4 fd equipped but not as strong.

b16 tranny has the sam 1-3 as the type r but the b16 4-5 are shorter. so this makes up somewhat for the final drive. you can get a b16 tranny w lsd for $750
and use the rest of the money for a jdm itr final drive.

The 1996-1999 JDM ITR transmissions are different from 2000-2001 JDM ITR transmissions. One difference is the final drive. It is 4.40:1 in 1996-1999 transmissions and 4.785 in 2000-2001 transmissions. Final drive alone has no effect on performance. It only does if the gear ratios are such that the overall ratio is changed. For instance, first gear is 3.23:1 on both ITR transmissions. So with the 4.785 final drive of the later transmissions, you will get out of the hole better. On the other hand, fifth gear went from .848:1 on earlier transmissions to .787:1 on later transmissions. Because of this, freeway RPMs are about the same with either. As for USDM transmissions, I think they stayed the same as the early ITR transmission throughout the entire time the car was sold here.
theoretically the best tranny using all honda parts would be an si 1-5 gearing, 98 R diff and a jdm itr FD.
stock tranny alone a 98+ jdm itr tranny is the best.
BTW: for reference our best 60 ft. with the stock diuff and FD was 1.66......with an lsd an the jdm itr fd we pulled 1.55's....it works
