I hate small batteries, OEM sized (group 51/51R) are the only things I'll use, and at that point, I'll take them from whoever has the best warranty. I can't tell you how many cars with those small batteries have starting problems on my dyno..
I learned this the hard way. I've tried a Hawker Genesis and a small battery from Baker Precision. Both created lots of headaches on the dyno. Switched to a cheap Everstart battery from Walmart, zero battery/charging issues. Even with leaving the electric water pump and fan on in-between runs for a good amount of time to cool down. I'll probably pick-up a Die-Hard just for some added peace of mind.

man, I had a Die Hard battery purchased in 2005 go bad on me on the very LAST DAY of the 3-year free replacement warranty!! Luckily I went to Sears the next day and they still gave me a new one free of charge.
I won't ever touch AutoZone batteries, as I had one explode in my old car when I tried to start it one night at school.

I've got the odyssey pc925 and it's never given me a bit of trouble in 4 years. I was a bit scared to go with the smaller 680. I think this is a nice compromise.
Johnson Controls manufactures the batteries Wal-Mart sells under the Everstart brand. It is nearly impossible to find a better wet cell battery even at a much higher price point.
Jim Truett is right. Johnson Controls control the Walmart/SAMS battery market. I worked at Sam's and usually the only time we would be batteries back was within the purchase week of the customers purchase, but even that way rare.
Thanks for adding to my peace of mind. On a side note, I just fired up my race car for the first time in about a month, not even a small hiccup when I turned the key.
Johnson Controls does Wal-mart batteries... Thats interesting because Johnson Controls does Sears line of Die-Hard batteries too. Whats with the price difference? Could it be they are made to different qualities?
i would go with an intertsate battery and stay with the group 51 unless ur wire tucking then use the odyssey but intertsate might be more expensive but it has the best warranty and they are the best battery i have ever used
ya johnson controls also makes intertstate batteries, i work for interstate batteries and i think they come out of north dakota, maybe south dakota, and like said before, they make wal-mart everstart, they just use different quality material, but u cant beat an interstate no matter what anyone says, imo.
I've had 2 optimas long enough to consider giving a review for. (third is ~1mo)
The first redtop was 14 years old when I let it drain down in our -20* winter this year and it froze. Prior to that it was showing signs that it was getting weaker, but still better than the 2yr old battery that the previous owner put in my daily.
(I jump started my daily driver from a car that started only three times during the winter)
The yellow top is beat on regularly in a buddies car with a pretty serious stereo, it's 12 years old is still kicking strong.
The third red top is now just under a month old, but it's being removed for a Deka when the weather gets over 50* again. (track duty)
"best" depends on what you're going to do with it. Street duty, find the one that will fit (physically, capacity and price) and has a great warranty and enjoy it.

optima yellow top for the car
kinetik 600 for the system
and a built alternator for the system if you want your electrical system and everything running well enough to hold the system plus run all the lights and electrical workings in the car.
