Bent Half-Shaft?
Ok, I have had a weird metal on metal noise coming from the engine bay for a little while and the car shakes when driving it as well. I am trying to track it down/fix it, and I finally figured out exactly what is causing it, it is the half-shaft. The metal on metal claking noise is coming from where the blue arrow is pointing below. Upon inspection, the part of the half shaft that is shown with the red arrow (the cover/seal piece of metal where the half-shaft meets the transmission) appears to bent out of shape a bit. We pulled it out and straightened it out as best we could, re-installed it and tried again, same thing, but if I watch where the half-shaft connects to the transmission, it moves in and out about 1/4-1/2 and inch or so each rotation of the shaft. What I am wondering is, could a bad CV shaft (drivers side that connects to the half-shaft) cause this, or would this be something in my transmission doing this (is that possible)? I have no idea how you could bend that piece of the half-shaft, but is it worth a try to replace both the half-shaft and the drivers side CV shaft, or is this more than likely a major transmission problem? Thanks for any help!
Maybe the bearing, part 22 I believe, went out, and that is what is caused it to move, and bend. Or maybe during a launch, you axle and tranny held, and the halfshaft was the weak link?
