battery question
ok i dont drive my car except for on weekends, so it go basically sat to sat without being started. the past copuple weeks when i try to start it the battery is dead, and their is battery acid around the positive. so i scrap it off with a wire brush and jump the car and everything is fine. so my question is do i need a new battery or is this normal for a car not being started in a week, someone told me it may also be my alternator.

the only time a battery is affected by sitting is if its for an extended amount of time (like over the winter). when it sits without activity, sulfation builds up on the plates inside and they no longer conduct the way you want them to. its the activity of starting & charging that limits this sulfation build up. yes, there is a SMALL drain from being connected to the car, but its not large enough to have an effect on a healthy battery within a weeks time. do what they suggested though - charge up the battery as much as you can with a charger, then bring it to a shop and have them do a load test on it. if the shop has alternator testing capabilities, this would be a good idea also. although it sounds like its most likely your battery. hope this helps.
