Default Bad steering rack = 'clunk' on pull off ?

Bad steering rack = 'clunk' on pull off ?

Hey all,

I have some play in my manual rack (have yet to diagnose) but it does thunk when I turn it dry to the left or right... but that not the main concern.

When I pull off from a stop... I hear a light 'clunk' form the bay... sounds kinda like a dead mount... but all of my mounts (main left, right, rear and both torque mounts) are either brand new or in excellent condition. I do have poly inserts on the rear/torques... but I've had those before w/o incident.... could the bad steering rack be to blame for the clunk at clutch engagment ?

mine went out, and say when i was coasting with no gas on it, it would seem to wobble and felt as if the tire was fixin to fall off, however when i wouuld apply gentle throttle it would somewhat stop and seemed to keep it straight and hardly wobble at all. eventually it got so bad you could visibly see out the window that the rim was wobbling in and out, so i babbied it into the shop after that

EG chassis...

I don't get wobbling... I do veer toward the left badly... but I also need an alignment...

But could the rack sound when accelerating ? Or could I have something else 'clunking' ?

A bad balljoint or tie rod end would definitely cause clunking.

How many miles on the chassis?

I had a similar problem in my teg. It took me forever to figure out that the sway bar had came was loose where it connected to the front lower link. I was told it was common for them to come loose and it sounded like it could have been the steering rack. You will need a allen wrench to check if it's tight.

It's a 93 EG chassis... does it even have a front sway ?

I would check your front lower control arm inner bushings for play.

I think you need to get under the car and inspect all the suspension and steering components. Sounds like something is loose, but then again it could be your rack or ball joints. I have a buddy with an EF that also has similar problem caused by a sloppy rack & ball joints.
