Default b16a2 rebuild, major things to replace?

I'm gonna have motor rebuilt with new gaskets, seals, bearings, belts etc. The shop I talked to said I don't need to replace pistons or valves unless damaged. I'm gettining new rings though and valve stems and machine work. Should the pistons be replaced? What other major components should be replaced? this is a stock rebuild for my girlfriends car so it has to be reliable.

wow that seem like a lot of money for a stock rebuild but anywho listen to your shop. Most of the time they know what they are talking about. Get your cylinders honed. Get a new water and oil pump while your at it too.

they said it would be between 1500 and 1800 depending on machine shop prices, they have to send it out. They also said OEM honda bearings would be too expensive and to go with ACL. should I just replace pistons anyway? can't cost that much.

I would let the machine shop decide about the pistons. If you are not looking for anymore performance and just want to have a "fresh" B16, stock pistons will be fine.
If your pistons are in anything BUT excellent condition, Id replace them. Rings should be replaced regardless...
Everything you listed should definately be replaced, as well as the waterpump and oil pump IMO.
If the machine shop is SURE that ACL bearings will provide the proper clearances, go for it. I believe theyve been proven to be reliable.
$1500-$1800 doesnt sound too extreme considering parts, labor, AND machine work.

I believe acl bearings only come in one size, so just make sure that they check the clearances to make they fit properly. You don't want a spud rod or main bearing due to it being too tight or too loose. Otherwise pistons don't necessarily neet to be replaced, unless it's craacked or something.

I guess I'll have to wait and see what everything looks like when disassembled. If pistons are cheap enough I'll replace them, but i'm gonna go with oem honda bearings just to be safe.
