B-series tranny casing question...
I have 96 JDM ITR tanny with broken ear where the rear engine/tranny mount bolt on to, can i use a core 94+ LS casing and swap the ITR internal over without any issues? Thanks in advance
I just did one.
you will have to swap out the itr diff bearings.
gsr and itr uses neddle type bearings, while the others uses enclosed ball bearings.
swap the bearings and shim and you sould be fine.

ToeJam,
Would you perfer the needles (taper) bearing or enclosed bearing? Seem to me the enclosed bearing you don't have fool with the shims compares to needles bearing. What other advantages do the needles bearing have?

I went with the enclosed bearing because it was easier for me.
I just installed the new bearings, shimed, and call it a day.
There is a slight advantage in using the taper bearings; it is thier ability to support greater loads.
If you dont mind swaping everything over from the itr, then stay with the taper bearing. this way you wont have swap out bearings.
Just install the itr shims and the itr outer roller cages into the LS and clearance. Install the right shim when needed.
Good luck

Yes all hydro B-series cases are interchangeable. The only differences are if it's an open bearing or closed bearing diff. Just use the outer casing from the ITR cause then you don't have to take any of the shims or cups out and switch them. Everything else will fit right in. I'd suggest buying new bearings and seals since you'll have it apart anyway. The only tricky part is getting the outer casing off. There's link at the top of this forum to a whole tranny rebuild. If you do a lot of street driving you should look into swapping the 5th gear to an LS 5th also.
