Default Axles for ZC LSD diff in S20 case

I've been in touch with the tranny allstars on here, but I want to see if there is anyone who has actually done this, or has some more insight. Mista bone is probably right, I should get raxles and call it a day, but I dunno, paying more for the axles then the LSD DOHC cable ZC tranny itself just doesn't make sense to me, plus re-engineering something, and having it work is fun as well.

I will be doing the ole' ZC 3, 4, 5 in my Si z6 tranny, however, I want to use that LSD diff as well. I don;t want to mess with a haflshaft, I find it uneccassary if the car will have LSD anyway. I figure all I need to do is find inner cups (end peices that slide into the diff) that are the same length as my civic ones, but have the larger spline section, slap em on my civic axles, and call it a day. The math makes sense, the question is as follows:

Which axles do i need to pull those inner cup peices off of to work in my application?

I have heard 90-93 DA is what I need. I also hear first gen integra is what I need. Anybody happen to have some solid insight?

Anybody interested in trading a DOHC ZC LSD for an obx or quaife meant for an s20 case?

Are you at all familiar with the subject? If so, something like; "I know ****, don't bother, heres why" would be more useful instead of leaving me to interpret what you mean.

haha, in that case, I apologize! I'm just used to the typical HT responses. I may be able to help you with some of your questions since I've been doing research on this since I've already purchased a couple trannies. IM me if you have any specific questions I might be able to help you with.

I've been in touch with bense. we are on the same page that it should be workable with one of the axle ends. I was hoping to find someone that has more then theoretical info for me before I try it myself.

I have two of the big diameter ZC axle ends in my garage. You should be able to swap them onto your stock D series axles and pop them in with no issues. Let me know if you are interested.

pmed, I am interested if the price is right.
Thats my logic as well, but I'll have to have everything in my hands to test it and see if it works or not.

$20 picked up/$30 shipped. I know for sure they were from a ZC tranny. It is just two right side inner CV joints. They should fit the ends of the D unequal length axles.

Jim, are you getting my pm's? I said I'd take those, and i have a friend who might be interested in your ex trans.

Anybody else have info on the subject?

Sorry, I have just restored my PC after the move, and unfortunately PMs are blocked at work.

The axle ends are boxed up and ready to ship if you still want them. If so, $30 to turbod17@***.net.

Everything else I have for sale is now on ebay. I got tired of being beaten up by lowballers here on h-t.

I thought I replied here, guess I didn't. I'll take em, but give me a couple days with the payment.

Anyone know if these will work for sure by chance?

from my long past ZC experiences, any DOHC ZC tranny has to use the bigger integra inner joints/splines. For JDM EF DOHC ZC engines or 2nd gen ZC's as I call them, 90-93 integra axles + ZC half-shaft is the correct axle combo to be used with a 2nd gen ZC tranny. 86-89 integra axles are too short and the half-shaft has the wrong mount design to completely bolt to the back of a 88+ SOHC block.

As you've already learned, the DIFF or LSD dictates what size axles or inner joints need to be used, and most of the time its the bigger splined integra or B-series axles that need to be used. The problem is you're trying to get around not having to use a half-shaft. I don't know off hand if a right side 90-91 integra or ZC axle (the side that plugs into the half-shaft) has a the same size spline diameter as the left side axle that plugs directly into the Diff/LSD, but if it does, then you're in luck and can possibly swap out your civic's right side inner joint for that of a 90-93 integra inner joint.....but I don't know 100% if that will work; if you can mix B-series inner joints/bearings with a D-series shaft.....

The other side of this problem is that not all SOHC blocks have mounting holes for a half-shaft to be used, and I don't know what year your motor is. I know that the D16A6 blocks support the use of a half-shaft. Some of the D16Z6 blocks have the holes for the half-shaft too, but are not threaded, but some are.

Wish I had more axle hybriding experience, otherwise I'd have the answer for you....

If you Jim's inner axle joints work for you, please give us an update!

sorry for rambling on at midnight

Thanks for the great reply. I'm pretty much at the same understanding. I'm just surprised that nobody has tried it, everyone tries everything with hondas! I will update when I know more, but I'm fairly confident the zc or da axle inner joints will work.

he's got a d16z6 block which doesn't have the halfshaft mount holes like the d16a6 block does.

I have a feeling that it's going to involve taking his 92-00 d-series unequal axles, and mating a pass side DA teg inner joint to each side. If not that then it's something close to that.

You might want to try getting the parts required then taking them to a place that will rebuild them and offer you some kind of warranty.

I'm doing the same thing. I tried making hybrid axles last night with the 86-89 teg inner cup and my CRX driver shaft, it's a little too short and it will come out of the tranny. I just compared the CRX end to the teg midshaft to the teg axle end. The axle ends are definitely different lengths, and different from the midshaft. The midshaft also does not have a circlip on it, maybe there's no groove for it in the diff?

Actually, I think he's going to need 2 driver side inner joints instead and use one of these joints on the passenger side shaft (if this is possible)...because the passenger side inner joint has a step in it which will prevent the joint splines from fully plugging into the diff like the driver side would.

I have pictures I can share tomorrow of what Im talking about...

Please share. The issue is, the drivers side is a half shift!

Let me correct my last comment about the inner splines/joints with pictures!

Here's a set of DA axles and half-shaft:

I measured the inner splined shaft lengths of all 3 axles.
The axles inner joint spline shafts have the exact same sized shaft length (2 1/8 inches)
However, the half-shaft measures a tad longer (2 3/4 inches).

This MIGHT pose as a 'sealing' problem if you plug the DA passenger side inner joint directly into the transmission, as the inner shaft length is a tad too short in comparison to the half-shaft.

Only way to find out is by trying it!

But, you first might wanna see if the pass.side inner joint plugs and locks into the diff nicely (in place of the half-shaft); if it loosely fits in the diff and easily comes out, then its obviously not a safe setup to run....

hope this helps.
