Default Axle Problems. possible answer inside:

i'm trying to make this as generic and with as many key words as possible so someone that needs this info can find it.. so pay no attention to the words at the bottom of the thread

i searched for over 6mos to find out why my passenger side axle wouldn't go all the way into my tranny. it stayed out nearly 1/4" and leaked tranny fluid like nobody's business.
quick note:
Y1 tranny/hydro conversion.

i had most people tell me that all axles are the same, a couple said "there MAY be a difference... one IS cable and the other hydro", but nobody could give me a difinitive answer. nobody could tell me FOR sure why my axle wouldn't go all the way in.

well, a friend stopped by while i was wrestling this thing for the 100th time. "oh, yeah. cable axles have longer splines than the hydro tranny"

wtf??

sure enough. that was it. i searched HT for MONTHS! i found similar posts asking for help, but were usually followed by:
"you have a pm"
"hey, that fixed it. thanks!"
or
"i got it. nevermind"

either way, NOBODY ever posted the answer. well, here's a pic:

this shows the difference.

in short anyone with a cable tranny, you need the axle with the FULL LENGTH splines. the others are hydro

that's it. someone please archive this thread?

axle, different length, doesn't fit, hydro, cable, tranny, leaking, B-series, splines

92 is a hydro tranny but you can still use the cable tranny into the 92up.

exactly. not thrilled about the whole hydro coversion thing, but the gearing is nice and it DID come with a Quaife LSD.

the axle you have on the right in the pic is a 90-93 teg DRIVERS side axle..

90-93 had a female intermediate shaft and 94+ have a male..it could be the diff..I have heard of issues like this before with axle spline on quaifes..

Iam using 90-93 axles (all 3) in my 95 gsr tranny in my 99 HB
