ASE certified?
Just curious, how many people in the tech forum, or H-T in general are actually ASE certified mechanics? How much has having that background helped you modify Hondas for better performance, if it helped at all?
Sorry if this is not a typical tech related topic, but I wanted to get the right audience for it.

im not ase cert. but i know more then a kid i know who just graduated from uti so all that tells you is he payed to make more money in the future because he is ase certified and i learned more then he knows in my back yard and at work
Master ASE certified tech with L1 advanced engine performance as well. It don't mean squat. It means you can take a test. It does not mean that you can fix cars. The reason that I got mine in the first place, and the reason that I keep recertifying is that I can get more money. Same reason that I have my smog licence. It helps when you are applying for a job to get the most dollars per hour.
ase ceritfied,.........hmm my example will be this
one person goes to duke ....... one person goes to unc charlotte ... they both learned the exact same thing , but if they both go to the same place looking for a job , who will get hired ,... the guy from duke , casue his diploma says he went to duke.... and he is considered "smarter" when they are really both equally smart
ase is like haveing a nice diploma , helps for a job in the future

The tests are not extremely difficult. My friend took all of the tests necessary to become a Master Mechanic in two test sessions and passed them all without studying. Albeit, he is exceptionally smart.
Being able to pass tests doesn't make you a great mechanic. Being able to wrench and think makes you a great mechanic.

So my assumtion was correct then? Where can I go to get certified? Just any tech school or specific ones?

bringin this thread to the top. im 17 and lookin at what i wanna do when i get out of high school. i wouldnt mind goin to college to for a degree in business, this way i can open up/run a shop in the future. but my life has to have something to do with cars.
To pass Auto 2 in my High School, we had to get ASE certified in something. I'm certified in brakes, but it doesn't mean anything. I've met tons of people without any sort of certification that know tons more about brakes than I do. All I did was study a book and take a test.

I had 3 ASE's in 1995. (listed below) Now I work on computers. ASE certs are a joke. They are basically for bragging rights for your employer.
Manual Drive Train and Axles (A3)
Suspension and Steering (A4)
Brakes (A5)

To me the ASE Cert's aren't just bs.. It may just be a test, but it shows people just how much you understand how a car is suppose to run. There are some people out there that have ASE Cert's and don't know squat too... I see them all the time. They ASE Cert's because no one keeps track of how many times you've taken the tests, that information is irrelevant. Your ASE badge doesn't say that you passed the Cert after failing four times, it just says ASE Cert'd.
With me, I've just started with my ASE Cert's and I can tell you that they're pretty darn easy as long as you understand how a car works. I currently hold Cert's in Electrical, Steering & Suspension, Engine Repair, and Brakes.
And to answer your question: No, the ASE Cert's have not helped me modify my Honda for better performance. But the knowledge I hold has helped me along the way.
