ARGH What the hell =\
I think I have a little problem. Every now and then my shifter stiffens up a hell of a lot. It starts to vibrate, and gets really hard to shift gears. Then all of the sudden it will go away. Any idea what this could be?
Also, I have a 55 shot. I just installed it, and today I was using it. To make a long story short I missed 5th gear (please don't ask
) and the tach SHOT up to redline INSTANTLY. I immediately let off, and the car is driving but is having minor (I hope) problems. The best way I can explain it is, the exhaust sounds more "bubbly" It's making a bubbly sound, mostly on acceleration. It drives fine, no loss of power or anything. I guess I'll start with a compression check. I have a feeling the head gasket may go, which is nothing major.
Any, and all help with this stuff is very much appreciated.
EDIT I've come to the conclusion that I hit 3rd gear instead of 5th. It's the only way the tach could have shot up that fast, and revved to 9. I have a stock rev limiter, so the only way it could get passed is if it was forced. I just checked my compression and it was straight accross the board. Is it possible my timing slipped?

I had one of the first model year Dodge pickups with the Cummins diesel.. and a 5 speed Getrag transmission. That tranny used light (engine oil). I went through four of them before approaching the warranty end and bailing out.
What appeared to happen was the engine had so much torque, the heat would build up and seize the close tolerence bearings (etc) in the transmission. It almost always happend during extended drives (hours), though the loads weren't necessarily high.
Your tranny sounds like it may be doing that -- your description describes what my tranny did during those times... Check the oil level in it lately? Or, perhaps you have a bearing going out. The symptoms in my tranny would go away when it cooled down.
Regarding the 'bubbly' -- suspect a bent valve. You might check clearances to start with and see what you can see.

I just recently replaced my clutch/flywheel (last week). I can't remember exactly if it did this before then. It feels like the shifter is dragging on the ground sometimes. That's another way to explain it...

Clutch hub has possibly popped a spring or more. Replace clutch and the clutch release and pilot bearings that don't spin freely and smoothly.
We just replaced the clutch and flywheel on his car that had the same problem. The clutch engaged really low and the pedal pressure was more like an aftermarket DSM clutch than any Honda clutch I've ever driven.
It was really hard to get the shifter into any of the gears and practically had to be forced in, and even if you could get it in gear, it would grind really bad.
In the end, the clutch had completely popped out two springs, another was on its way out, and had one broken retainer. Heat scoring and scathing on the flywheel and pressure plate with unusual clutch friction pad wear.

yep like when you're doing engine break. did that happen or the tach just went straight up and the car is still moving normally without slowing down or jerking?
