Default Amsoil really that much?

Just curious... what do you use then? Anyhow... any car driven hard regardless of how great the oil/lube is will eventually break down. I have never known of a Mechanic working at a car dealership that didn't like Amsoil....

It's funny that you mention Mobil... I know of numerous Mechanics and Technicians that don't like misleading mobil 1 oil either. So I guess it goes both ways...

Here's a tip though if you put Amsoil oil or gear lube in a pretty worned out tranny or one that has a lot of miles, or a beat up one... it's gonna create transmission problems. Why? Reason is the additives cleans out all the gunk that's been collecting over the years from using regular transmission/oil/gearlube. That in terms will cause the tranny to seem like it won't function properly. Put some miles on it and flush it all out with some new oil/lube. You'd be suprise... now that genuine oil does'nt seem so great...

I am still for Amsoil!

Yes i'm aware the dirt begins to hold things togther . My rule is if a customers tranny fluid smells burnt or is black i wont drain or refill or flush it. I disagree with flushes anyways and i'm not for mobil 1 at all im for genuine honda there is a big difference.

While this may sound cocky i dont really need a tip, im a factory trained BMW and Land Rover technician.

Only Reason i like Mobil (honda geunine only ) so muhc is becasue i ahve had numerous oil burning engines and out honda 10W 30 in and magically they stopped burning as much oil

If you like AMSoil thats what you like i just persoanlly think it's crap and wouldn't use it or suggest it.

Read up on oil additives, and you will see why amsoil is a great oil.

I honestly wouldn't trust any dealership mechanic to change my spark plug wires

Like I said... it goes both ways. Especially in OEM parts. You won't see a high performance garage using regular oil, and I seen just as many problems with any other car regardless of manufacturer.

All I am saying is when it comes down to the boiling point... which oil would you rather be using while on the racing... I guess normal oil is good for a normal car.

If put to real wear & tear test... I don't think you'll standard oil will hold up against amsoil...

That alone is more than enough for me...

this topic is real hard to compare since if you put every oil on the same standarized test you will get results to compare, but then, on real life, people put on oil and don't treat the drain intervals as they should be and then they go around talking trash about the oil when in reality is not the oils fault....

I don't really know why amsoil recomends a drain interval of 25k on normal cars, i think is wayyyyy too much.

IMHO it doesn't matter what brand of oil, the most important thing is drain intervals...off couse, i know they are some very good oils out there, i think the best brands are:

Motul
Mobil 1 (not the best, but very good quality for what you pay)
Amsoil
Red Line
Royal Purple
Belray
Silkolene
Selenia

just my $.02

I agree. If a person is only going to do 3K mile OCI's then most oils on the market are more than sufficient. For example, I'm using Chevron Supreme 10W-30 oil that I buy for $0.69/qt. Though its a cheap oil in price, it has a very good additive package and is a good performer. In fact I did a used oil analysis on the oil and it did better than a lot more expensive oils.

Here are my numbers:
1994 Acura Integra LS
154,832 mi

Chevron Supreme 10W-30 w/ Supertech filter
4,844 miles with no add on.
2months on the oil.
Uni Foam Air filter
Auto Rx treatment done 5K miles ago.

25K drain interval was something Amsoil did back in the late 70's early 80's I think. As I recall Mobil 1 try to compete on the same level by unveiling also a 25k interval type of oil but their oil didn't live up to it's reputation.

Amsoil's oil have changed little if not at all over the years while Mobil and many other leading oil base manufacturers have changed their formula. The thing that gets me is they keep saying their newly re-formulated oil is better, but in fact it's not... it's only gotten worse.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on oil usage. For me the only oils that will ever go in my car is Amsoil. If I had to choose something else besides Amsoil I would go with Valvoline. Unless Mobil 1 changes their formula and until I can get my hands on some raw data and test, Mobil 1 would be at the bottom of my list, high price for low protection....

Actually, you want high Calcium and phosphorus levels. Taken from: http://www.blackstone-labs.com....html

Calcium: Detergent/dispersant additive.
Phosphorus: Anti-wear additive

Since those are both additive level indicators, you want a high amount in your oil.

true.. bot those are horrible things to use.. they break down easy..its like using cheap parts...

if you wnt anti wear.. get somethign with high moly.. and Magnesium for your Detergent/dispersant additive.. which doeesnt break down as easy..the calcium and phosphurus.. is the cheap way of making oil good..think of it as... a good tools.. theres snap-on/mac.. ect.. and theres walmart tools LOL

I've heard some people say that Castrol Synthetic is tested better than Mobil 1 syn. True? How about some other high dollar oils, like Redline and royal purple?
