alt. qustion .. PLEASE HELP!!
ok here i go .... if you change the size of the crank pulley and it only drives the alt. will it change the voltage in the alt.?? example geting a smaller size crank pulley that drive the alt. will that increase the voltage ?? and a bigger pulley will decrease the voltage???
A larger crank pulley will increase the RPM of the alternator and a smaller crank pulley will do the opposite. The voltage regulator should compensate for the higher RPM but lower RPM will be a problem for the alternator at idle.
so if i put a smaller cranck pulley on im good to go , but ill have crapy idle? as long i dont short any thing out .. thats wat i was afriad of ...
That's what underdrive or overdrive pulleys are all about. Smaller pulley on the crank will make the alternator spin slower. I guess it depends on what car, but Honda probably chooses the pulleys so when the engine's idling, the alternator is spinning just barely fast enough to handle all the electrical loads.
A smaller crank pulley means your alternator is taking a little less power away from your engine. But your headlights will dim when you idle & it MIGHT light up the charging idiot light. It won't give you a crappy idle unless you sit at idle all day long draining the battery.
Shorting something out is a COMPLETELY different thing...
