Default alignment

i hit the curb pretty hard on my driver side wheel and now the steering wheel is off-center when i'm going straight. i need to either get the alignment fixed or replaced. are there any wise tips to be had b4 i go to the shop? need suggestions on how to tell if i need to get it replaced or just realigned.
