Default Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge

I recently hooked up my air/fuel ratio gauge on my 99 honda prelude sh. I found the 2 o2 sensors underneath the car. I tapped the white wire which is suppose to be the signal wire. Although it jumps from 1 volt to 12 volts at half throttle ..therefor giving me an incorrect reading on the gauge. Now the way i understand it is that the reading should only be in the 1 volt area.......so when i step on the gas my air fuel ratio gauge goes from lean all the way to the top of rich. so wtf is goin on? Do i have to brab the signal wire at the ecu? and if i do ...what color is it?.....white?
