Default air/fuel problem

Just installed air/fuel gauge and it keeps reading extremely lean to not even lite and every now then it would jump up but not always when i would accelerate. Also switched to the connectors so it would read the secondary sensor and it just lights up like a christmas tree while driving, just going back and forth between rich and lean. Think it's the o2 sensor but a friend had a similar problem and his was the mass air sensor. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, has someone had a siimilar problem?

I have normally seen this when it's not hooked up to the right spots,in my experience. Just make sure all the connections are right and solid.
good luck...

check the wiring, or if that's not the case, the sensor is bad then

Is it a narrow band or wide band a/f gauge?

I believe a narrow, it's a auto meter. We hooked it up to the white wire, there were two used the middle one, on the blue connector to the ecu on a '00 dx hatch, y7 motor.

It's a narrow band then, auto meter's a/f gauge are only usable when it is at WOT hence the narrow band. You're getting the lean conditions because the gauge can't see the full "rpm band" that a wide band a/f gauge will show. It will show only the higher rpm range where the wide band will show everything from idle up to redline. It's a waste of time and money for having the Autometer a/f. It's more the bling then function. Get a real a/f ratio like: PLX M-300, Innovate LM-1, AEM, or any other wide band a/f ratio moniter.

it doesn't have anything to do with the rpm range it is because it is 0-1 volt instead of a wideband - 5 volt.I'm assuming yur refering to how that exact display works? that doesn't make anysense. how does the guage know what rpm it's at? It only knows what mixture is passing the sensor its hooked to. and obviously it will be richer. but like he said definetly get a wideband 02 setup....sensor/controller/gauge. if you looked at the wideband display at cruise you would see a similar oscillation as with the lights going backand forth kinda like the stock (narrowband) 02 does while trying to maintain a 14.7 (STOICH) condition.

Let me rephrase it: power band. it only works at a higher rpm at full load at WOT.
