Default Advanced cam timing gains??

This is probably a dumb question, but my friend use to have a stock ls back in the day, and his top end power was crazy for an ls, especially a stock one, and he used to pull on gsr's all day, the car pulled hard well past 7k rpms, into like the 8k+. He never told me or any of our friends what he did to make it so fast, cause it was not always that fast, did I mention it was an automatic? One of our friends bought it after he blew it up after putting 100k miles of more abuse than any car should see lol and tore it down the day after it through a rod through the block, cause he downshifted to first doing 65mph . . . yeah, I know . . . and it was all stock just like he said. The car was perfect prior to throwing the rod, never burned a drop of oil, he never fixed anything on it, put almost 100k miles on it in a year with his crazy a$$ driving, and went 15k miles without an oil change, yeah, this car was bulletproof. One of my friends over heard him when he got the car back from the shop and it was magically 10 times faster talking to his mechanic about how he liked it after he advanced the timing. Im not a mechanic, but im pretty sure ignition timing would not make these kind of gains, so im thinking he advanced the cam timing a degree or 2. Would this make a noticeable gain? Enough to make a stock automatic ls walk all over a gsr? Hes a good driver, but not a miracle worker lol, im just curious if this could have been what made his car so fast, if not, any other ideas? BTW all he had was a short ram intake, and a custom exhaust, didnt even have headers . . . o and we tried his ecu on another stock ls, didnt make any difference, so I dont think it was the ecu either. Somebody please help me solve this mystery, so it can be put to rest lol

No nitrous, popped hood all the time and no nitrous lines, and no where to descretly hide the bottle, without somebody seeing it.

Where can I find these magic LS heads that pull to 8K+rpms? Sounds like he must have had two stage nawz.

The gearing is much too long on an automatic. Even if he had some high compression pistons and headwork (which you wouldn't see if you popped the hood).

Alright, I may have exaggerated the 8k+ a little, but he definately made power up to 8k, and lets assume no form of nos was involved, can advancing cam timing on a stock ls make any real gains?? BTW This is how he drove regularly, like everytime he was driving his car lol, so if it was nos, he would have been refilling it daily lol

Thats what made it even more suspicious, he topped out at like 150mph lol he had some long a$$ gears.

Lol....This is funny. STOCK ls with advance timing yielded 8k+? You need to do your research boy.

I saw it myself, along with everybody he raced and beat, idk that advanced timing did that to his car, that's what I'm trying to figure out, but just cause it's a longshot doesn't mean it's not possible, boy.

Advancing the cam timing a couple degrees isn't going to make a huge difference. It will shift the torque curve a little lower in the rpm band and will help increase torque in the lower rpm.

It is possible that he advanced the ignition timing a little and was running race gas which would increase power a bit.

I have a 94 LS and I beat GSRs all the time, even Type Rs, the 75 shot and GSR transmission W/Phantom Grip LSD, CDI 5Zigen exhaust, [no header either] definitely help and I am sure if I "bypassed" the rev limiter, [red line 6800rpm rev limiter 7200rpm] and can push it all the way to 8000rpm, along with some tuning, I would spank GSRs/Type Rs.94

What about retarding the timing? Is one whole tooth, whether advancing or retarding timing too much? I think that is 9 degrees, which sounds pretty dangerous. He had stock cam gears, so he could not have done degree tuning, he would have had to go by teeth.

I use to drive with him, and he always filled up with regular, so the higher octane is not it, unless he was sneaking in octane booster, which I wouldnt put past him lol

He broke his rev limiter by revving the sh*t out of it daily lol could you beat gsr and type r's without nos? What do you think of the phantom grip, is it worth the money? Just asking, cause ive heard mixed things about there lsd's.

So this auto downshifted to 1st at 65. He must have some mad driving skills because I didnt think an auto would allow it to downshift to 1st above around 25

Broke his rev limiter? That is awesome! I bet everyone on here wants pictures of the broken pieces! I wonder if it just snapped in two, lololol!

Without nos, unlikely, unless on an autocross track, but that may have more to do with my suspension and driving skills.

The Phantom Grip LSD works very well, only problem is the springs are only good for about one season of autocross, I replace them every year, I am very good at pulling a tranny out of a 94 LS, I have done it every year since 96. 94

Believe me? LMAO...
Like I give a chit if anyone believes me, the only guy I have to impress is the guy in the GSR in my rear view mirror and he is already a believer. 94

If you force it into gear hard enough, it will go . . .

A rev limiter, can be "pushed", if you hit the rev limiter enough, it will start activating later in the RPM band over time. I have seen this with several cars, it doesnt necessarily "break it" but it does push its activation later.

I found out he took the shift lock out, which explains why he could downshift to first doing 65mph

I disagree with this, there is nothing in the software that does this.

Ditto that, I understand the ECU/ECM must be re-chipped or existing chip reprogrammed, is that not the case? 94

Yes, that is true. The rpm at which fuel is cut is preset and does not change.

All I know is his rev limiter when he got the car was kicking in at 7k-ish, and by the time he blew it up, over the course of a year or so, it slowly moved its way to 8k, it did not do it all at once. This also happened to another friend of mine with an auto integra, but his went from like 7200 rpms to like 7500 rpms. Cant explain it, but it happened . . .
