ACT 4-puck questions
yea im lookin into a new clutch for my hatch and i was looking at the ACT 4-puck but ive been told its too strong for my car its a stock 96 civic HB with the d16y7 in it...is it really that bad for my car???will i ruin anything major like mounts and ****??? im planning to buy the 4 puck pretty soon like tomorrow so anyone with answers?? thanx
There are lots of opinions on pucked clutches. Unfortunately most of them are from people who haven't owned/used/driven on one. They aren't as bad as people make them out to be. They are easy to drive on once you get used to it. Besides the hard engagement and squeakiness, they can be driven just fine.
In your case, the 4 puck is a little too much for your D-series. Is it stock? I wouldn't worry about a pucked clutch unless I was making power due to some sort of forced induction or a high power N/A setup.
Keep in mind that the ACT pucks are unsprung, which makes the engagement even more rough. It WILL grab hard, and be hard on your axles and even your interior. My dash sounded like it was going to fall on my lap every hard shift. My radio fell out a few times, and my S-AFC stopped functioning due to the shock. Pucked clutches are also not very "daily driver friendly." They eat up your flywheel pretty fast and they always squeak upon engagement because of the plate material.
If I were you, I would go with the ACT Heavy Duty pressure plate with one of their Street/Strip discs. If you are gung ho on a pucked clutch, at least look to a manufacturer that has sprung pucked discs.

You will break an axle if you always shift hard and do hard launches. (That's if you have stock axles) Of course you can drive on it with the 4 puck. It just takes some time to get used to, but you'll get comfortable with it pretty quick.
I'm just saying that it's a little overkill for what you have now. I'm sure your passenger doesn't want to hear/feel the entire dash drop onto their lap on every hard shift, or hear a squeaky engagement every time you shift.
It's good for high power applications, because at that point half your interior will be gone anyway, you won't have A/C, a radio, and much of anything else. You won't mind a harsh shift and a squeak.

They are expensive and I couldn't justify spending at least $350 for a single axle. Look at http://www.driveshaftshop.com and see what power levels you are going for.

thanx for the info guys its koo i didnt get the 4 puck cuz all the people sayin its boo boo for my stock dx i just got the exedy single plate organic full face
i have a ACT HD 6 puck as well and it grabs too hard, already cracked my stock tranny. Plus the bearings make a lot of squealing noises if not installed correctly and not lubed up properly.
The 6 puck was too much of a hassle to drive since it was in my daily driver and I was in traffic everyday. I would pick the full face if I was NA.

besides the noise and chatter its not that bad, if you really need the holding power of it. only downside is that puck clutches eat up the p/p and flywheel like ****.
From someone who daily drove a sprung 6-puck clutch on a Series,
It SUCKS.
it chatters bad.
I had to slip the clutch to keep my car from bucking like a rodeo bull.
this resulted in a quicly and severely worn clutch disk and flywheel.
I will NEVER buy one again, not even for a race application on a relatively stock motor.
