Default ac question- please help im running out of deodorant

I was wondering if the ac condenser fan would still go on if i was out of freon? the mechanic said he didnt want to add freon because the fan didnt turn on. i hooked the fan directly to the battery and the fan works. but when i run my engine and turn on ac, the fan never comes on and blows room temp air. btw its hot as hell.

if you have a civic with a half radiator, then you condensor will not come on with the radiator fan; for, they don't share the same circuit. However, if you have a full radiator like an integra - then the condensor should also work as a secondary radiator fan [IMG][/IMG]

To answer your question....your ac system needs sufficient pressure for the fan to turn on. If your mechanic is really concerned then find out what the correct capacity is for your system and have him evacuate and refill with that amount. If for some reason your fan doesn't work properly afterwards, the ac system will overpressurize and not work properly in town/traffic, but out on the open road when sufficient air is blowing through it will work fine.

if your condensor fan isnt coming on when the ac is turned on with or without freon there is a electical problem and the mechanic was right and honest to tell you before adding freon .. he could have easily of charged you for adding freon even though he knew in the begining that it wouldnt work ... i would trust that mechanic

If you have no refrigerant, the A/C amplifier will not turn the compressor on and therefore the condensor fan will not operate. There are usually two pressure switches, one of them will open below a specified pressure. The oil in the A/C system flows with the refrigerant; if there is no refrigerant, there is no pressure, and the oil will not be circulated. This is a fail safe.

ok guys heres an update, i bought a diy kit, i refilled the ac with refridgerant, but the ac fan still wont come on.. so i guess thats the answer. also i guess i overfilled a little (maybe alot) and when i turned on the ac to max.. it sorta exploded with the refridgerant... i then leaked some refridgerant out.. and now runs fine (besides the fact that fan doestn work.) now to check relays.

cliff note: when ac fan does not come on, its most likely electrical problem. and the amount of refridgerant doesnt matter.
