Default Is ABS good or bad? for daily driven

Okay so i been wondering why do people take out their ABS? isnt that a good thing so your tires wont lock up and you'll start skidding? or is it b.c you want to practice without ABS so u know how to use your brakes. whats the deal. my ABS light is on thats why i been researching and i see people taking them off. just wondering. I have a 96 integra. man i searched and i cant find anything on this subject. theres too many ABS queston out there. so can anyone shine some light on this? and dont tell me to search b/c i did. and if u are going to do that save urself some time and dont do leave any messages.

You'll start skidding if your tires DO lock up, because you wont have control after that. Plus braking power with a slightly rotating tire is actually better than with a full locked tire.
So yes ABS is better for daily drivers.

I have a 96 rs and it did not come with abs. Scared the **** out of me when i found this out one night, but i have got used to not having it. It helps to have a good set of tires and brakes. The biggest downside would be in the rain, but i fixed that by not driving as fast in the rain, and putting more distance between me and other cars.

that's always a good thing with or without ABS.

I slid right through an intersection a few years back in my teg when I got a yellow light and I was driving a little too fast (with abs at the time).

30lbs or so with the pump, fluid, brake lines, sensors, wiring and relay box.

That sounds awfully heavy for ABS systems, the lines are the same as in regular brakes, the sensors dont weight more than few grams, the control box is less than one kg. It shouldnt be 30pounds.

Have you ever picked up one of these pumps full of fluid?
The pump is heavier than you think+ the extra fluid. For clarification, I'm talking about the pump I had which was larger (94 Integra) than the late model pumps.

I weigh everything that comes out of my car.

My car weight is 2060 with a 1/4 tank of gas, full glass, no cutting, CF hood and sunroof plug, with the factory interior from the front seats forward.
And a H22 swap

Well the advantage of ABS outweighs the few grams it adds, honestly. Ok theres some extra fluid, but the non abs system isnt gonna be empty either.

My corolla weighs 950kg(2090lb) fully stock according to my registration, ac and stuff.

If you're gonna lighten it all, take out the brakebooster and get a pedalbox system.

It all adds up.....including fluid yes? Nut's, bolt's, brackets, wire, relays, sensors etc.

For my application I have to disagree with your reasoning. I have personally removed the system from my car for weight/performance reasons and base my opinion on my application and experiences. I don't think this is for everyone and some should have it simply because of their drivings habits.

Modifying the pedals/brake booster and master cylinder is illegal in the class I race in.

PS-My weight numbers are based on actual car scale at the track. DC2's typically come in around 2400lbs or more.

A good driver without abs can stop faster than in the same car with abs. If I remember ABS was designed because people have a tendency to slam on the breaks and try to turn the wheel at the same time which does not allow them to avoid the object they don't want to hit. ABS sacrifices a bit of stopping distance so that the average person can turn around the obstacle as well.

ABS can also be a real pain in the *** in slick conditions. When going down a steep hill in snow ABS can keep you from coming to a complete stop. Although I have not tested this with a honda and I know this from 4 Wheeling. My buddies with new abs equiped rigs can never seem to get stopped going down steep hills. You almost need a little skid to start plowing snow with the tires which finally makes the vehicle come to a complete stop.

I would be very careful about making generalizations, especially with young impressionable ricers that will take something on HT as a rule and go strip out thier car. The vast vast majority of street cars on street tires will stop better with ABS. with slicks The computer may pump the brakes at some threshold deceleration, increasing distances slighlty, but how many of us run slicks on the street?
I think we all agree that lockup will increase stopping distances hugely. So it's all about threshold braking. sadly computers almost always hold a car at threshold braking better than a person... Even if you are a good driver, you can't control 3 or 4 channels of braking independantly.

96Prelude Si
Modulator with lines to master cylinder 19 pounds dry
ABS computer 5 pounds (approx, I can go weigh it if you really want)
Plus wires to/from computer

I think the 30 pound estimate was right on.

For those of you guys who road race or autocross with a street car: Have you had problems with ABS, or if you have removed ABS; flat spotting your tires? I'm curious to know...

yes i do agree with the guy on top. i know that u need abs for safety reasons and for some new drivers that havent have the luxury to own a car without ABS doesnt know the fundamentals about it. so it can be bad or it all depends on the driver.
