91 Accord TRANSMISSION PROBLEM
I have a 91 Honda Accord. The spedometer stopped functioning about 4 months ago. Sometimes when I'm sitting at a stop light it will decide to bounce around, sometimes it kicks on and works for a minute or two, but usually it just doesnt work. The 'S' light comes on after a few minutes and eventually the check engine light will also come on. I did the test with the paper clip and I think it came back as 'speed sensor'. I havent really been to concerned about not having a functional spedometer but I was going to change it when I got my financial aid when school started back up again.
Lately, I have been having another problem with my transmission that is of more importance. When I start up my car and put it into D4 and go to accelerate the car seems to be slipping. I believe what it is doing is starting out in D4 gear or possibly slipping. If I manually downshift into D1 it downshifts into 2nd gear and starts accelerating normally but it doesnt actually downshift all the way to 1st gear. Then I shift up to D2 and it doesnt shift at all since obviosuly it started out in 2nd gear. When I shift to D3 it shifts into 4th gear I believe. The weird part about the whole thing is that I've noticed when I start accelerating from the get go and I notice this problem, if I turn the key off and then back on very quickly before the engine kills, the transmission will kick into 1st gear and shift through all the gears just fine. This makes me believe it may be electrically related instead of someone who said I may have a dirty filter. I have also noticed that in colder temperatures I have to let the engine warm up a bit before the 'turn-the-key' solution will work otherwise it kicks into gear for a split second and then jumps back out to the slipping feeling again.
I was going to try the paperclip test and look at the D4 light but unfortunately my D4 light doesnt light up!! I have a friend with a snap-on tester .. maybe he can hook it up to the transmission if I knew where to hook it up. Does anybody know what could possibly be wrong with my transmisison and what I need to be checking out? Maybe the shifting silonoid?
Thanks A Great Deal,
Terry
