90 EF, CEL code 12, code 17
My EF hatch has a b18a1 swap done. It was done horribly, wires just twisted together and taped over, Enough extra wire to rewire the whole car with, etc etc. Last night i went over every connection i could reach and spliced it the right way and loomed everything as neatly as i could. Anyways, my ecu has been throwing code 12, which is for the EGR system failure. The car is still OBD0, and i think the ecu is a pr4, not 100 percent sure though. The light only comes on either right after i start driving or after its been driven for a while.
How could the EGR system be affected, is there an actual mechanical aspect to it or is it all ran by the ecu?? Is the 02 sensor a culprit?? Does the vacuum system have anything to do with it??
It also throws code 17 most everytime the CEL comes on. I checked and the cable seems to be firmly inside the tranny. Does it need a clip or need to be snapped inside the transmission?? My speedo still works though.
Thanks for the help

The EGR valve uses intake vacuum to open. The EGR control solenoid regulates the amount of vacuum supplied to EGR and therefore how far the EGR opens. The EGR valve lift sensor tells the computer the degree of EGR valve lift which the ECU compares to what it determines from engine sensors to be the ideal valve lift and then adjusts accordingly. Your VSS sensor problem could be more difficult to figure out. If you don't know which ECU you have, you might try swapping in the correct ECU temporarily.
EGR's a very irritating system that doesn't add power, dirties the intake and fails easily.

Hey thanks delsol. Ive noticed that the vacuum canister that is on the firewall has a line plugged off, and there is a line on the back of the intake manifold that is plugged off also, maybe ill try hooking those up and seeing if that has any affects on my engine. The CEL for the EGR system only comes on sometimes, its not a constant code.
When i bought the car he gave me an extra pr4, from a b16 i think. Maybe ill try hooking it up as well to see if it does anything different. Thanks for the response.

NP. With the exhaust gasses running through it, the EGR valve can get dirty and struggle to operate, intermittently causing CEL's. Engine problems like a rich condition, low compression or any misfiring greatly speed up the dirtying process. When you have some free time, you could try cleaning the EGR system with some carb cleaner.
i have 1990 acura integra. it was given to me. when I open the hood i notice there was an egr. the car is a gs manuel and the engine i was told is a 93 b18a1. which has an egr. egr is not connected an seems to be by passed. everything on car is still 1990 manuel and enigne is Ls. will i still need egr. the car ideals than once warmed up it goes from 2000rpm to 1000rpm. any suggestions.
