Default 89 Civic shifter woes

Have everything hooked back up after swapping in a lower mileage tranny. It is in a 1989 Civic LX sedan, 5 speed manual. It will go into gear but the shifter will move all over the place. I have a black rubber band with two metal clips. Does anyone know what part of the linkage this wraps around to hold it steady? Or is there something entirely different to hold it steady?

EDIT: Posted in EF but people in there must be asleep.

If at all possible, I need an answer by Tuesday at 3pm EST, as I'm trading this car at the dealership for a 96 Civic hb.
